BACKGROUND

A producer considering selling their passive profit participation interests in a television series turned to GHJ’s Profit Participation Services (PPS) team for expert guidance. The entertainment industry continues to witness a rise in buy- and sell-side transactions, largely driven by private equity firms seeking long-term revenue from film and television assets, including sequels, remakes and derivative works. As a result, profit participants — from producers to directors and co-financiers — are increasingly pursuing liquidity against the future value of their interests. With limited financial data and a complex transaction ahead, the client was supported by GHJ to navigate its options and support an informed decision.

  • Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis: This method was used to value the entertainment assets, including a historical analysis and projection of future revenue streams. The PPS team leveraged its collective understanding of the entertainment industry to evaluate the property’s value and long-term revenue potential.
  • Application of Discount Rate: A discount rate, including risk adjustments, was applied to discount future cash flows to the client’s present value.
